What is Yohimbe?
Yohimbe or Yohimbine as the active chemical is known is a bark extract from the Pausinystalia yohimbe evergreen tree. These trees which can reach heights of 90 feet are commonly found in the western African nations of Cameroon, Nigeria, Congo, and Gabon.
The History of Yohimbe.
Used in Africa for hundreds of years as a treatment for impotence and as an aphrodisiac. Yohimbe has also been used to treat leprosy and high fevers. However it is mainly known for its benefits for men with impotence and has been used in Europe for just that reason.
What Evidence Exists?
Yohimbe has been the subject of numerous clinical trials for the treatment of impotence. When Viagra and other prescription medications such as Levitra were introduced, studies have lessened. The overall results from clinical trials have been mixed. Some trials indicate Yohimbe is an effective treatment for male sexual problems such as impotence. One clinical trial indicated that Yohimbine combined with L-arginine (which is thought to affect erections) showed improvements in male sexual function.

Yohimbe is available in many forms including powder, tablet, capsule and liquid.
What is the Safety of Yohimbe?
Both Yohimbe and Yohimbine can increase the heart rate and blood pressure of the user. Consequently those with high blood pressure, diseases of the kidney, heart and / or liver, nervous disorders and / or anxiety should not take Yohimbe without first consulting their physician. In addition those who consume alcohol in excess and / or take medications should also speak with their doctor prior to taking Yohimbe.
